Prior to joining our family business, I never understood just how complicated it is to make aquality pair of socks. The production process requires a complex supply chain to source the proper raw materials and intricate knitting overseen by highly skilled professionals.
Even though our no show socks for loafers have a very low profile, they actually take nearly as long to produce as our over the calf socks do. Knitting these loafer socks requires a tedious reciprocating motion in the machine that is extremely time-consuming. Whereas most socks are knit relatively quickly in a cylindrical shape on a circular knitting machine, the shape of no show loafer socks is completely different.
Furthermore, the finishing and packaging process requires additional steps as a no-slip silicone heel grip (shown above) is added to the inner portion of each sock's heel. Once that process is complete, the socks are then pulled onto a small piece of cardboard that holds the pair together.
Our merino wool loafer socks took over a year to develop and prototype. In short, making men's loafer socks is surprisingly complex!
How to Care for Loafer Socks
When it comes to laundering your loafer socks, extra care is required. This style of sock is manufactured using several high-stretch yarns that are key to maintaining the integrity of the socks. Exposure to heat will rapidly degrade the elasticity in the socks and cause them to lose their shape. Be sure to follow these four steps to ensure your loafer socks last:
Step 1: Turn Inside Out
Turning the socks inside out will help keep lint and any other debris from adhering to the exterior of the socks.
Step 2: Wash in Cold Water
Per the comments above, heat will degrade the elasticity of your loafer socks. Be sure to wash them in cold water and avoid heat.
Step 3: Air Dry
Again, avoiding heat will dramatically improve the life and functionality of your loafer socks. We recommend laying them flat to air dry.
Step 4: Use a Sock Laundry Bag (Optional but Helpful)
Loafer socks are small, low-profile socks that can easily disappear in the laundry. We recommend using a sock laundry bag to not only help keep up with them but to also prevent them from getting tangled in other garments.
